Wildlife and highlights

Serengeti is renowned for its extraordinary wildlife diversity and is home to the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinoceroses. The park also supports large populations of cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles and numerous bird species. The annual Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the park's most famous attractions, with vast herds moving through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

Best time to visit

June to October is generally an excellent period for wildlife viewing because the vegetation is lower and animals are easier to spot. The Great Wildebeest Migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti throughout the year. January to March can be particularly rewarding in the southern Serengeti during the calving season, while April and May usually bring heavier rains and fewer visitors

Travel tips

Start game drives early when wildlife is most active and temperatures are cooler. Bring binoculars, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable clothing and a good camera. Pack a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings. For migration experiences, choose the Serengeti region and travel dates carefully because the herds move throughout the year. Respect wildlife by maintaining a safe distance and following your guide's instructions. Consider combining Serengeti with Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a complete northern Tanzania safari.
