Ruaha National Park
Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and less-crowded safari destinations, known for its large elephant herds, powerful lion populations, dramatic baobab landscapes and diverse wildlife. It offers an authentic wilderness experience away from the busier northern safari circuit
Wildlife and highlights
Ruaha is home to elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, greater kudu, impalas, hippos and many other wildlife species. The park is particularly renowned for its elephants and large carnivores. Its diverse habitats also support a rich variety of birdlife.
Best time to visit
June to October is generally the best time for wildlife viewing, as the dry conditions concentrate animals around water sources and vegetation becomes thinner. The park can also be visited during the green season, when the landscape is lush and birdwatching is especially rewarding.
Travel tips
Pack lightweight clothing, a warm layer for early morning game drives, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, binoculars and a camera. Ruaha is relatively remote, so allow enough time for travel and consider staying for at least two or three nights. Follow your guide's instructions and maintain a respectful distance from wildlife. Combining Ruaha with other southern Tanzania destinations can create an excellent extended safari.
