Wildlife and highlights

The lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro support diverse wildlife and birdlife, including elephants, buffaloes, leopards, colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and numerous bird species. Wildlife sightings become less common as trekkers climb into the higher alpine and glacial zones.

Best time to visit

January to March and June to October are generally among the best periods for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, offering relatively favorable weather and clearer conditions. The mountain can be climbed throughout the year, although some months are wetter and may provide more challenging trekking conditions.

Travel tips

Choose a reputable trekking operator and allow sufficient time for acclimatization. Pack warm layers, waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, gloves, a hat and sun protection. Train before the trek and stay hydrated throughout the climb. A slower pace helps with altitude acclimatization. Climbers should follow their guide's instructions and take altitude-related symptoms seriously.
