Maasai Mara National Reserve
Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most famous wildlife conservation area, renowned for its exceptional wildlife density, spectacular landscapes, and the annual Great Migration. Located in southwestern Kenya along the Tanzanian border, the reserve forms part of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and offers some of Africa’s finest safari experiences.
Wildlife and highlights
Maasai Mara National Reserve is situated in Narok County, southwestern Kenya, forming the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem. Named after the Maasai people, the traditional inhabitants of the region, and the Mara River that flows through the reserve, Maasai Mara has become one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world.
Established in 1961, the reserve protects a diverse ecosystem consisting of open savannahs, riverine forests, seasonal streams, wetlands, and rolling hills. These habitats support a remarkable concentration of wildlife throughout the year, making Maasai Mara one of the best places in Africa for game viewing.
The reserve is internationally renowned for the Great Migration, an annual movement of more than 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles crossing between Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Maasai Mara. The dramatic Mara River crossings, where animals brave crocodile-infested waters, attract photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and documentary filmmakers from around the globe.
Maasai Mara is particularly famous for its healthy populations of large predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. The reserve has featured prominently in numerous wildlife documentaries and research projects due to its high density of carnivores and predator-prey interactions.
Beyond wildlife, visitors can experience Maasai culture through village visits, cultural performances, traditional crafts, and guided community tours. The surrounding conservancies, managed jointly by local Maasai communities and conservation organizations, have become a model for community-based conservation and sustainable tourism.
Activities in Maasai Mara include game drives, hot air balloon safaris, walking safaris in conservancies, birdwatching excursions, photography safaris, cultural visits, bush breakfasts, sundowners, and conservation-focused experiences. Luxury lodges, tented camps, mid-range accommodations, and budget camps cater to all types of travelers.
The reserve remains one of Africa’s most important conservation areas and continues to play a crucial role in protecting wildlife migration routes and biodiversity within the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
