Aberdare National Park is located in central Kenya, approximately 150 kilometers north of Nairobi, within the scenic Aberdare Mountain Range. Established in 1950, the park covers approximately 767 square kilometers and protects a variety of ecosystems ranging from dense rainforest and bamboo forests to alpine moorlands and mountain peaks.
The park is famous for its stunning landscapes, featuring deep ravines, rivers, waterfalls, and forested slopes. Some of its most notable attractions include the magnificent Karuru Falls, one of Kenya’s tallest waterfalls, the picturesque Chania Falls, and the dramatic Gura Falls.
Aberdare National Park is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, leopards, spotted hyenas, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, waterbucks, and the rare and endangered black rhino. The park is also one of the few places in Kenya where visitors may spot the elusive bongo antelope.
The park's cool climate and dense vegetation create ideal conditions for birdlife, with more than 290 recorded bird species. Birdwatchers can observe sunbirds, eagles, hawks, plovers, and numerous forest species throughout the year.
Aberdare is particularly famous for its historic tree lodges, where guests can watch wildlife gather at illuminated waterholes and salt licks during the night. January to March Clear skies and excellent visibility. Ideal for wildlife viewing and photography. June to October Dry conditions and comfortable temperatures. Best period for hiking and game viewing. November to December Green landscapes and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
Travel tips
Carry warm clothing as temperatures can be cool, especially in the evenings. Waterproof jackets are recommended due to occasional rain and mist. Use a 4x4 vehicle for easier access to remote areas. Bring binoculars for birdwatching and wildlife observation. Visit waterfalls early in the day for the best photography conditions. Book tree lodge accommodations in advance, especially during peak seasons. Follow park regulations and remain with guides when hiking.
